ABSOLUTELY
1/3/2018 0 Comments Week of January 3-5Happy New Year, and welcome back to school! I hope everyone had a nice break!
A couple reminders: Please make sure that, in this cold and snowy weather, your child dresses appropriately for outdoor recess each day. Students should come to school prepared to go out each day, unless we have sub-zero temperatures or wind chills. While students in 5th grade are sometimes too "cool" to wear cold weather gear to school, it is still very important! Boots are required at recess if students want to play off the blacktop area (field, monkey bars, etc), and coats are a must as well! I'll do my best to make sure students are bringing their cold weather gear home each day too! Please make sure you are looking at your child's planner each day. We write what we did that day, and we write homework too. Additionally, please sign your child's planner ONLY if he/she did reading and math fact practice. They are responsible for these tasks each day, Monday through Thursday. If they don't finish their homework, they walk during part of recess on Fridays. What's Happening in 5th Grade? Math: We are working on decimal operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and soon division! Also, students will be starting a decimals project that will be done mostly at home. Please ask your child about it! Writing: We are working on expository writing. We are writing solid, organized paragraphs and will soon be writing an essay too! Reading: Students are creating a Figurative Language book, and we are really working on sequencing, theme, and using context clues to understand new vocabulary. Social Studies: Now that students have learned a lot about their explorers, they're going to be writing an informational paper. This will be done mainly in class, but please ask your child to tell you all about his/her famous explorer!
