ABSOLUTELY
12/12/2017 0 Comments Week of December 11-15I hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of their December. I'm sure everyone is looking forward to a much deserved winter break. We have two weeks before break, and in the couple of weeks, we are doing some awesome learning here in fifth grade at Arrowhead!
For everyone with a band or orchestra student, don't forget that their concert is this week on Thursday at 2:30! I can't wait to hear how they sound! Math: We just finished our chapter on addition and subtraction with decimals, so we are moving on to multiplication with decimals. This is a new concept for most fifth graders, but many students are already figuring out how everything works! ELA: This week, we are starting a new unit. For the next several weeks, we are going to be reading fiction and nonfiction that relates to different experiences leading to new discoveries. This week, we are looking at literature that teaches us a bit about different cultures. The students are also writing a narrative about a "dream vacation." These are lots of fun to read--check out your child's narrative progress in our Google Classroom. Science: More Project Lead the Way with Mrs. Eagle! The students are coding to create a dinosaur ecosystem simulation! Social Studies: Each student is well on his/her way to becoming an expert about one early European explorer! The students already did some research, and now they are working on a poster to present to the class on Friday. Most students will finish with the amount of time given to work in class this week. If your student isn't finished by Thursday, you might see a poster come home to finish up. :-)

11/13/2017 0 Comments Week of November 13-17Hello from Arrowhead! We are plugging right along here, still learning every day in many ways! It's almost time for Thanksgiving break too. Don't forget: we only have school Monday and Tuesday of next week. If your child is going to be gone for either of these days, please let me know so I can arrange for make-up work.
What are we learning? Math: We are working on decimal place value and comparing, ordering, and rounding decimals to the thousandths place. ELA: We are reading biographies and looking at investigating nature. We just finished our MT Tribal Nations expository papers and we are working on writing narratives. Social Studies: We are starting our European Explorers unit of study. We will be looking at the reasons why Europeans were exploring the Americas during the 1400s-1800s, and we will be learning general information about 17 explorers. Science: Students are working on coding with Mrs. Seab and Mrs. Eagle. 11/5/2017 0 Comments Week of November 6-10Happy November!
First, I'd like to say that I really enjoyed visiting with everyone at conferences. That 15 minutes never seems like enough time, but I hope you feel like it was valuable. I certainly did! Snow, snow, snow!! Yes, the weather certainly has changed over the last week. Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate winter clothing, including boots, hats and gloves. Unless the weather is deemed unsafe, we will continue to be outside for morning walk and recess. Don't forget to have your child bring shoes to wear inside too! What's Happening This Week? Math: We are finishing up our work on multiplication and division this week, and we will start looking at decimal place value later on in the week. Keep working on those math facts at home--your child should practice 10 minutes per day. ELA: This week we are reading from the fantasy genre and looking at what we can do to get information. Ask your child about the "Modern Cinderella" story we are reading. It's certainly more relatable to their generation! Students are also writing a personal narrative. Social Studies: This is the last week we will work on our MT Tribal Nations. Students are typing up their papers, and we will be editing, revising and publishing our papers. Science: Students continue to work on "Infection Detection" for PLTW with Mrs. Eagle and Mrs. Seab. 10/29/2017 0 Comments Week of October 30-November 3Hello everyone!
It was fun seeing so many families at the PTA sponsored Family Fun Night! A big thank you goes out to all the people who helped make it happen, including everyone who sent in items for our silent auction basket, and Natalie Holloway, for organizing and putting the basket together! This coming week is a busy one at Arrowhead. We have parent-teacher conferences mid week, and don't forget about our early out days. School is done at noon on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I look forward to seeing everyone at conferences. If you're not sure of your conference time, send me an email and I can verify your date and time. Halloween is Tuesday! I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween. Be careful Trick-or-Treating! Please know that, even though it's a holiday, we will still be learning, learning, learning in fifth grade. Some of the activities we do may be more fun, though :-) What Are We Learning This Week? ELA We are working on a unit in Wonders that explores the question "What do good problem solvers do?" Ask your child about some of the ideas we've discussed. The literature we are looking at this week focuses on some historical documents that are important to the United States and how our founding fathers solved problems to create a foundation for our nation. Writing Students are finishing up their first attempts at a personal narrative. You can view your child's narrative on our Google Classroom site. The students know how to get in to view their work after it's been assessed by me! Math We are continuing to work on division this week. We are working on division with double digit divisors now. We're focused on estimating and figuring out where to put the first digit in a long division problem, and we are multiplying to check our answers. We will work later this week on interpreting our remainders as well. Social Studies Students are working on their MT Tribal Nations papers. We are using Step Up to Writing strategies to organize our writing. Ask your child about his/her colored sentence strips! Science Students are working with Mrs. Seab on Infection Detection in science. Ask your student what they're up to in science! 10/22/2017 0 Comments Week of October 23I hope everyone had a great long weekend! It sure was nice to relax and have fun over 4 days!
First, I'd like to remind everyone that Family Fun Night is this Saturday, October 28 from 4:00-6:00 pm. And, the silent auction baskets (including our awesome emoji basket) will be on display at the office all week. Bidding ends on Saturday at 5:30! **Parent/Teacher conferences are next week! Your child brought home a green sheet with your conference time on it in last week's Tuesday folder. Please check your time and let me know if the time assigned doesn't work. I'm pretty sure we were able to accommodate everyone's requests! What are we learning this week? ELA We are reading about and discussing the positive and negative effects of new technology. Ask your student what his/her thoughts are about technology in our lives! Writing Students are working on a personal narrative. We are going through all the steps of the writing process, and right now, students are in the 'drafting' stage of the process. Math We continue to work on division. We will start double digit division and we will be working with the "partial quotient" strategy for dividing large numbers. I encourage students to bring their whole book home to do homework instead of just tearing out the page they're working on. That way they have examples! Social Studies Students will finish presenting their slide shows for their MT Tribal Nations project, and then we will begin writing our expository papers for this project. Science Students continue to work on PLTW "Infection Detection" with Mrs. Eagle and Mrs. Seab. 10/18/2017 Week of October 16This week is a short week, and we have a nice long weekend coming up! We still are learning, learning, learning!
In math, we are working on long division using the standard algorithm, in Social Studies, students are finishing up their MT Tribal Nations Slideshow, and in ELA, we are reading about technology and inventions. Students also started writing a personal narrative--ask your child what he or she is writing about! Our auction basket for Family Fun Night (emoji themed!) is filling up. If you still have to send in a donation, please contact me to let me know you have something to add. I'll let Natalie Holloway know so she can make room! |
