4/16/2018 0 Comments Week of April 16Hello, everyone!
It seems spring is finally here! Not only does that mean warmer weather, it also means we are winding down our school year! We have about a month and a half left of fifth grade, and then your children will be off to middle school! We have a lot going on in these next weeks though. We have testing, field trips, guest speakers, projects, and concerts coming up! Math: We are starting fraction division this week! ELA/Writing: We are focusing on finding text evidence in our fiction and nonfiction reading, and the students are going to be starting to write a narrative this week. They'll also be reading about recycling and creating an opinion paper about it. Science: Robots! Robots! Robots! The students love PLTW! Social Studies: We are studying the American Revolution, and soon students are going to be doing some in-depth learning about a key player in the revolution. Testing Schedule: We will be taking the NWEA tests this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (makeups will be next week). We will be taking the SBAC during the week of April 30-May 4. Please make sure your child is getting a good sleep and a good breakfast, especially on testing days. Testing will be done mainly in the morning. 3/20/2018 0 Comments March 20-28Hello Everyone! Happy Spring! The students are all enjoying the warmer weather at recess; I hope families are able to get out and enjoy some warm weather on the weekends (OR head to the ski slopes to get some end-of-season runs in!)
We have a busy week of learning this week, and we have a SHORT week next week. Here's what's going on: Special Events: *Hooked on Fishing Dissection Thursday, March 22 *Spring Break March 28-April 2 Math We just started working on fraction multiplication. Students are working on modeling fraction multiplication and learning the algorithm for solving fraction multiplication problems. Most nights, your child should have a little bit of math homework, unless he or she finishes it during class. I encourage you to take a look at your child's math book to see what we are doing! ELA We are finishing up another Wonders Unit, and this week students are taking an assessment. They are also working on a Lewis and Clark inquiry project. Students will present their slide shows for this next week! Writing Students aren't working on a long writing project right now, but we are setting the groundwork for some persuasive writing with smaller assignments that ask students to take a stand on an issue and show text evidence to support their opinion. Take a look on Google Classroom for some of these little assignments to see what your child has to say! Social Studies We just began learning about the American Revolution. Right now, we are studying the major events leading up to the Revolutionary War, such as the French and Indian War, The Boston Tea Party, The Stamp Act, and the Boston Massacre. The students are really getting into some great discussions about this! Science Students are working with robots during their Project Lead The Way time in Mrs. Eagle's class! 2/25/2018 0 Comments Week of February 26-March 2Hello everyone! First, I have to apologize for doing a crummy job posting weekly updates on my classroom blog these past few weeks. I hope you all know that if you do have questions about what we are doing at school, you can always call or email me at school! Special Happenings: This week is Dr. Seuss Week!! A flyer went home last week with all the different days, and I've posted it below as well. Students always have fun with this! We also get to watch the Honor Orchestra students perform on Monday afternoon--what a treat! Math We just started working with fractions last week. We are focusing on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. ELA We are reading some biographies this week and learning about how some historical figures brought about change in a positive way. Social Studies We are finishing up our unit on the 13 Original Colonies this week. Students will have a test on Friday, and we'll be doing lots of practicing in class to prepare. Science Students are having a blast working with robots during their Project Lead the Way time with Mrs. Eagle.
1/29/2018 0 Comments Week of January 29-February 2We have lots going on this week! We have a special guest coming on Tuesday from the Yellowstone Art Museum to do a "art suitcase presentation" and on Thursday we have Hooked On Fishing. Please remember to send a plain, cotton t-shirt with your child by Thursday for our t-shirt making project.
Math: We are finishing up our work with decimals and moving on to a bit of geometry this week. We will be classifying polygons, including quadrilaterals and triangles. Even though we are moving on from decimals for now, we will continue to circle back to these concepts, as we do with other concepts we've learned throughout the year. ELA: We are reading more expository text and working on finding text evidence to support our findings in text. Main idea is also a key idea in our reading. Students are working hard to determine the main idea of informational text as well as pointing out key details. Social Studies: We are continuing to learn about the 13 original colonies. Students are working with small groups and are going to create a model blueprint of their own colonial community. Science: The students are starting work with inputs and outputs with their robot "computer brains" and they're working on designing a toy! Writing: We are working on expository writing. This week, your student will be writing a paragraph about 3 fun weekend activities. He or she will be working at home on this on Google Classroom. The paragraph is due Thursday. 1/23/2018 0 Comments Week of January 22-26Hello Everyone! Here's what's happening this week!
Math: We are continuing to work on decimal division this week. Now, we are learning how to divide by a decimal number. So, we have decimals in our dividend, divisor, and quotient! ELA: We continue to focus on finding main idea and key details in expository writing. We are also working on finding text evidence to support our findings in our reading. Being able to quote accurately from text is very important, especially with expository text! Writing: We just finished our big Explorer Essays, and we continue to work on expository writing. Ask your student about the three best activities to do in the snow! Later this week, we'll be creating a paragraph about great weekend activities. We are working on strong organization and good, quality details in our writing. Social Studies: We just started our new 13 Colonies unit! Students will be learning about the lives of the early European settlers of the 13 original colonies. Science: Students are working with Mrs. Eagle on Project Lead the Way robots! 1/10/2018 0 Comments special announcementThe BPS 5th grade art reception night will be on Thursday, February 1st from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Yellowstone Art Museum. 1/8/2018 0 Comments Week of January 8-13Hello Everyone! We have a lot going on this week, so I'll just get right to it!
A FreshSchools reminder went out today, but I'll post here too: we are doing NWEA testing this week on Tuesday and Friday. Please do your best to have your child at school, and make sure your child gets a good sleep and a good breakfast! It really does make a difference! The Geography Bee is Tuesday, January 9 at 8:30 am. Good luck to Kaden and Parker as they compete to represent Arrowhead at the county Geography Bee! It looks like we may be getting some more snow this week. Please make sure your child is appropriately dressed. Students are not allowed to play in the field or on the playground equipment unless they have boots, and if temperatures get really cold, students must have a winter coat in order to play outside at recess. We want to make sure everyone at Arrowhead is safe! What's Happening? Math: We are starting decimal division this week! Students should also be practicing math facts at home each night, either with flash cards or on Xtra Math. ELA: This week we are reading fantasy stories and continuing to work on determining theme for the stories we read. We are also writing expository paragraphs. Ask your child about his/her "snow play" paragraph! Social Studies: Students are working on their Expository Explorer Essays. We are making sentence strips and writing our rough drafts this week. Then we will work on revising and editing. Science: Students have begun to work with the robots for Project Lead the Way! 1/3/2018 0 Comments Week of January 3-5Happy New Year, and welcome back to school! I hope everyone had a nice break!
A couple reminders: Please make sure that, in this cold and snowy weather, your child dresses appropriately for outdoor recess each day. Students should come to school prepared to go out each day, unless we have sub-zero temperatures or wind chills. While students in 5th grade are sometimes too "cool" to wear cold weather gear to school, it is still very important! Boots are required at recess if students want to play off the blacktop area (field, monkey bars, etc), and coats are a must as well! I'll do my best to make sure students are bringing their cold weather gear home each day too! Please make sure you are looking at your child's planner each day. We write what we did that day, and we write homework too. Additionally, please sign your child's planner ONLY if he/she did reading and math fact practice. They are responsible for these tasks each day, Monday through Thursday. If they don't finish their homework, they walk during part of recess on Fridays. What's Happening in 5th Grade? Math: We are working on decimal operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and soon division! Also, students will be starting a decimals project that will be done mostly at home. Please ask your child about it! Writing: We are working on expository writing. We are writing solid, organized paragraphs and will soon be writing an essay too! Reading: Students are creating a Figurative Language book, and we are really working on sequencing, theme, and using context clues to understand new vocabulary. Social Studies: Now that students have learned a lot about their explorers, they're going to be writing an informational paper. This will be done mainly in class, but please ask your child to tell you all about his/her famous explorer! |
