It was fun seeing so many families at the PTA sponsored Family Fun Night! A big thank you goes out to all the people who helped make it happen, including everyone who sent in items for our silent auction basket, and Natalie Holloway, for organizing and putting the basket together!
This coming week is a busy one at Arrowhead. We have parent-teacher conferences mid week, and don't forget about our early out days. School is done at noon on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I look forward to seeing everyone at conferences. If you're not sure of your conference time, send me an email and I can verify your date and time.
Halloween is Tuesday! I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween. Be careful Trick-or-Treating! Please know that, even though it's a holiday, we will still be learning, learning, learning in fifth grade. Some of the activities we do may be more fun, though :-)
What Are We Learning This Week?
We are working on a unit in Wonders that explores the question "What do good problem solvers do?" Ask your child about some of the ideas we've discussed. The literature we are looking at this week focuses on some historical documents that are important to the United States and how our founding fathers solved problems to create a foundation for our nation.
Students are finishing up their first attempts at a personal narrative. You can view your child's narrative on our Google Classroom site. The students know how to get in to view their work after it's been assessed by me!
We are continuing to work on division this week. We are working on division with double digit divisors now. We're focused on estimating and figuring out where to put the first digit in a long division problem, and we are multiplying to check our answers. We will work later this week on interpreting our remainders as well.
Students are working on their MT Tribal Nations papers. We are using Step Up to Writing strategies to organize our writing. Ask your child about his/her colored sentence strips!
Students are working with Mrs. Seab on Infection Detection in science. Ask your student what they're up to in science!
I hope everyone had a great long weekend! It sure was nice to relax and have fun over 4 days!
First, I'd like to remind everyone that Family Fun Night is this Saturday, October 28 from 4:00-6:00 pm. And, the silent auction baskets (including our awesome emoji basket) will be on display at the office all week. Bidding ends on Saturday at 5:30!
**Parent/Teacher conferences are next week! Your child brought home a green sheet with your conference time on it in last week's Tuesday folder. Please check your time and let me know if the time assigned doesn't work. I'm pretty sure we were able to accommodate everyone's requests!
What are we learning this week?
We are reading about and discussing the positive and negative effects of new technology. Ask your student what his/her thoughts are about technology in our lives!
Students are working on a personal narrative. We are going through all the steps of the writing process, and right now, students are in the 'drafting' stage of the process.
We continue to work on division. We will start double digit division and we will be working with the "partial quotient" strategy for dividing large numbers. I encourage students to bring their whole book home to do homework instead of just tearing out the page they're working on. That way they have examples!
Students will finish presenting their slide shows for their MT Tribal Nations project, and then we will begin writing our expository papers for this project.
Students continue to work on PLTW "Infection Detection" with Mrs. Eagle and Mrs. Seab.
This week is a short week, and we have a nice long weekend coming up! We still are learning, learning, learning!
In math, we are working on long division using the standard algorithm, in Social Studies, students are finishing up their MT Tribal Nations Slideshow, and in ELA, we are reading about technology and inventions. Students also started writing a personal narrative--ask your child what he or she is writing about!
Our auction basket for Family Fun Night (emoji themed!) is filling up. If you still have to send in a donation, please contact me to let me know you have something to add. I'll let Natalie Holloway know so she can make room!
