We are having a great time and doing some great learning in 5th grade these days! Take a look...
Math: We are working on place value of decimals as well as whole numbers. You may hear or see your child working on phrases like "the 4 in 41.56 is ten times as much as the 4 in 14.21"
ELA: Students just finished writing their personal narrative, and we are going to be starting our MT Tribal Nations research projects soon.
It's a new week and I am excited to be done with testing so I can see some awesome learning happening in the classroom!

Math: We continue to work on understanding and explaining the relationships between different place values. This concept may seem simple, but it's relatively difficult for us to actually explain. Ask your fifth grader to explain place value relationships!
ELA: We are starting our Wonders work this week. We will be reading some realistic fiction pieces and we will be talking about how people get their needs met. We will focus on summarizing and understanding the parts of a story and the vocabulary associated with those parts (characters, setting, problem and solution, climax, resolution, etc). Students will soon be writing their own story when we write our personal narratives.
Social Studies: We continue our work with maps this week, and the students will have a quiz at the end of the week (Thursday for Peter's class, Friday for Eagle's class). Your student should be studying the maps and terms in their blue social studies booklet.
Science: Students continue to work on "Mystery Science" with Mrs. Eagle.
Hello, and welcome to Mrs. Peter's 5th grade site! You'll find information here on a regular basis regarding our classroom 'goings-on.' I'll post information about special dates or events, and I'll give you an idea of what we are working on at school (does anyone else's children say "I don't know" when asked what they did at school today?)
Tuesday-Friday, September 4-7: NWEA testing in the morning. Please make sure your child gets a good rest and a good breakfast! Send a healthy snack. Give them a high-5 on the way out the door, remind them to do their best...You've GOT this!
Thursday, September 6: Back to School Night at Arrowhead. I'll be giving two presentations: one at 6:00 and one at 6:30. I'll have volunteer sign up sheets and you'll be able to get a peek at some of the work your child has been doing!
Wednesday, September 19: Picture Day!
We are working on whole number and decimal place value from millions all the way down to thousandths. We're looking at the relationship between adjacent place values, and we are discussing properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
English Language Arts (ELA)
We have been reading the novel Maniac Magee and delving into ideas such as theme, characterization, and how setting, including the aspect of circumstance, affects a story.
The students are working with Mrs. Eagle in science this year. They've discussed ecosystems, and they're learning how plants get the resources they need from air and water.
We have started off the year learning about maps: latitude, longitude, physical features, and a review of the continents and oceans. We will begin our study of Montana Native American tribes soon.
